The Kelly Green Seed brand has held a special place in our family since my humble beginnings with the company in 1971. I’m excited to expand our Kelly Green brand into this area of business and continue to offer our efficiency in seed production, conditioning, and packaging. We have 3 major company priorities: God, Family, and Work and do our best to keep them in that order. We are committed to provide superb Research, Performance and Service to our clients.

At Kelly Green Seeds, we understand how hard farmers and ranchers work to get the most value from every seed planted. The seed you choose is more than a purchase; it’s an investment that supports your family, your farm, and the future of your operation.

Since 1963, Kelly Green Seeds has been working alongside family farms and ranches, feedlot and dairy operations, and seed dealers and retailers providing high-quality seed that thrives across the Midwest and Plains. Our product lineup includes sorghum seed in a full range of maturities that’s widely adapted, developed and tested to perform.

Backed by Warner Seeds, one of the few independent sorghum seed companies in America, we’re committed to providing genetically superior hybrids that fit your every need. From research and development to ease of product accessibility and agronomic insight, we’re here to ensure your success year-over-year.

Today, I truly feel I’m blessed with the best team of seed professionals that I’ve had the privilege to work with in my career and extremely excited to share their talents with our clients. Here I’ve written a brief history of Kelly Green Seeds, and I hope it will help you understand why this brand is special to me and why I am excited to introduce it to a new generation. – Jerry Monk, Owner of Warner Seeds, Inc.

Our History

KGS was started in 1963 by James Walter “Pat” Patrick. Pat (as everyone called him) father’s name was Kelly Patrick. Since Patrick was Irish, Kelly Green is a color and the four leaf clover is the lucky one, a name and a logo were born.

It started as a sorghum forage company producing hybrid seed under irrigated conditions and selling to different dealers in the Texas and New Mexico area. Pat and his growers were successful in production and shortly thereafter Pat grew the business to start producing for 3rd parties and packaging in their sacks.

Pat hired Jerry Monk on September 13, 1971 to help in retail sales and seed conditioning. On October 1, 1973 Pat became sick while working in the new plant and went to the hospital that night and surgery the next day to remove some stomach ulcers. There were surgery complications and November 1, 1973, Pat passed away at age 51.

At that time, I was given the responsibility to manage and operate the business. I have always believed that in “Where there is a will—There is a way.” Through this extremely difficult time we completed harvest and started conditioning seed, and the business moved forward. Thankfully, I was blessed with many mentors during the next few years to operate this business.

Following 13 years of working at KGS, I was able to buy into the company in 1984. We expanded into grain sorghum production in the mid 80’s building a germplasm bank to service the needs of our customers. Shortly thereafter, I started accessing germplasm from Warner Seeds in Hereford, Texas to help service our area expansion needs. We continued our growth in the Southwest US, Southeast US, and Mexico. Finally, KGS became a producer of all cereal grain seeds during the 80’s to supplement our off season business.

In 1999, the opportunity to acquire Warner Seeds, both its robust germplasm bank as well as its facilities, came available. I took that opportunity. At the time, the Warner brand was larger, especially in regard to the grain sorghum acres, so the KGS brand was consolidated in the late 2000s. Almost 20 years later, we have the opportunity to bring back Kelly Green Seeds.
